What is mental health?

World Mental Health Day

Mental health is everyone’s business. It is the single largest cause of disability in the UK, significantly higher than cancer or heart disease and affecting one in four people every year.

It is important to raise awareness and encourage people to talk about their feelings. Even when you feel uncomfortable and don’t like to talk about them, it is healthy to know and say how you are feeling.

If you’re in good mental health, you can:

  • make the most of your potential
  • cope with life
  • play a full part in your family, workplace, community, and among friends.

Some people call mental health ‘emotional health’ or ‘well-being’ and it’s just as important as good physical health.

We all have times when we feel down or stressed or frightened. Your mental health doesn’t always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life. Everyone is different, some of us can bounce back from a setback, some of us may feel weighed down by it for a long time.

Does your insurance provider offer support?

Many insurance providers offer support services and they can include counselling for; bereavement, stress, relationship problems, and the more common anxiety and depression. You might also find that providers will offer help with tackling debt or the policy might cover obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, or addiction, and they might delve into psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy, phobia or trauma therapy or treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The range of services can vary between providers and some may only cover the life assured, whereas some may extend them to a spouse, partner and children.
